I just downloaded the newest version of Skype. As it updated, it asked me if I’d like to import my address book. I cautiously click, “yes”. *BAM* off it goes, cross referencing my 500 email and phone contacts I’ve collected over the years of Inter-webbing with it’s database of users. Low-and-behold, it finds 30-odd people I had previously not thought to be on Skype.
Little did I know that it went ahead and told all of these people that I was online and wanted to talk to them.
Luckily for me, I don’t have many enemies and most of these people were long-lost old friends who were excited to talk. And since Skype sent them all a friendly message telling them I had added them as a contact and wanted permission to chat with them, the calls and IMs started pouring in.
I laugh at my strange 21st Century Poverty Jet Set moment. I spent the afternoon video chatting, IMing and talking to friends all over the world, including in the following countries:
- Congo!
- France
- Canada
- Spain
Pretty awesome.
