Man, am I psyched to be home! After a short stay in Salt Lake City with Audrey’s parents, it’s good to be breathing clean, fresh, Philly air!

Check it out:

This is the air pollution hanging over the Salt Lake Valley right now. It is literally the worst air pollution I have ever experienced. And that includes places I’ve been that are considered the to have the worst air pollution in the world: Mexico City, Los Angeles, Bangkok.

They say it’s an “inversion“. Because it’s surrounded by mountains, similar to LA, the cold air sinks and traps air from rising up and out and thereby preventing it from ‘cleansing’ itself (or more appropriately, sending the pollution into the wilds).

The inversion is like a orange, black and grey blanket over the city. Literally, it blocks your view after half a mile. No kidding. It is disgusting. The whole place is wallowing in it’s own shit. And that’s no exageration! Sure is sad.

  • You wouldn't think, since it is on the coast at the base of a mountain--one of the most spectacular settings for a city on this planet--but the deisel was overwhelming. I was sick afterwards.
  • Cape Town, eh? Didn't know they were known for bad air. Although it does get windy there, doesn't it?
  • Worst air I've ever breathed was when I was stuck in traffic during rush hour in Cape Town. Paris is a close second.

Cough, cough, cough, yes it is bad. the worst in fact. we are dying here in january. when the inversion is bad the refineries and factories turn it on even more! People are wearing those little blue masks over their noses to filter the air. I thought there were just a lot of Emergeny Room workers at the store 'til I realized they were wearing them to filter the air they breathe. On the news, warnings are issued for people to not exercise outdoors or for the very young or the very old or people with respiratory conditions to stay inside. I want to move. i hate january. It's february 2 and a storm blew it out for a day but it should be back by monday. do I sound depressed or something? margmary in stinky salt lake city.
