I was pretty young when I realized that ‘digging a hole to China’ wasn’t really possible. My brother and I used to sit looking at my dad’s globe and figure out where we’d end up if we went straight down. Now, my buddies at Geekadelphia pointed me out to a super simple tool to do the globe thing digitally.

Turns out we here in Philly would end up somewhere under the Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia:

  • at least in the ocean we could cool off after the lava bath in the core of the earth

Technically speaking you end up directly south of china. If you were to dig straight through the earth longitudinally only, while remaining at the same latitude, then you would end up in the middle of China just south of Mongolia.
  • Haha - yeah, okay. Plus, digging through the molten core makes no sense at all.
  • Freakin' sweet! I'd end up just southwest of Australia.
  • Thanks, Mike. Pretty rad, eh?
  • How neat that several of you are ending up near SW Australia. That means if I dig through I'll end up somewhere in your neck of the woods. But I'm sure my parents still think it'd be China.

SORRY GUYS, the core is NOT molten! Gravity is so strong that by the time you get near the center, you are back to a solid. Please don't perpetuate another myth.
