Meet Dr. Werner “Snake Eyes” Herzog. [update: okay, that is a ridiculous name. We just call him Vern now.]

Audrey and I have been talking about getting a pet for a while now, but then the other day, our friend had some stray kitties playing around in his backyard and we committed to taking one. Well, that plan didn’t turn out to be as easy as we thought. Turns out feral young cats are nearly impossible to catch bare-handed. We spent half the afternoon trying, using several different tactics, none of which worked.

In the end we gave up and went straight to PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society), the awesome and highly recommended animal shelter on 2nd and Arch. After playing around with several cats, we were drawn to Werner particularly for some reason. For me it was his striking green eyes and his laid-back attitude. For Audrey it was his shiny gray coat and snugglability.

He was the perfect choice. The moment we brought him home he was completely at ease. And this, an ex-stray! He curiously nosed around the house confidently, then settled in the curling up in our laps and kneading his paws into our bellies. He’s an excellent cat. We’re convinced he’s an ‘old soul’ even though he’s only one year old. Hope y’all get to meet him soon!

He’s sitting on my lap watching me type this with focused intensity right this moment… I think he might be into blogging, too! Whoa.

  • Haha - he's a quick study, but I'm not sure his typing skills are up to the task yet.

Thanks for the photo props, Ben!

Werner, can't wait to meet you!
So happy that you guys adopted a cat from PAWS!!
Mark, your cat photo skills are top-tier, srsly.

  • Oh man, I need to hear this story! How has it escaped me for this long?

  • Ha! I DO remember what happened on the trip when we brought the cat to Indiana. I am pretty sure it involved a cat with digestive problems and a good family friend getting out of the car and threatening to walk the rest of the way to Indiana. LOL i can't believe we brought our cat on a road trip with us! recipe for disaster= 4 kids under the age of 10, the family cat AND an innocent bystander.

YAY!!! Another Schoneveld Kitty! Ahh, they are the best of friends, even when they eat your curtains, undies, and socks! Mine tend to scratch at my nose in the pre-dawn hours, hoping I will get up and feed them some goodies... KITTIES!!! love love love love them
    Willkommen zur Familie, Herr Werner!

Congratulations, OH he's soooo cute, are you gonna take him on your car trip during the holidays? Ask Audrey what happened when we took our kitty from Salt Lake City to Indiana. I think she remembers that trip. Maybe Dr. Werner will travel better than our cat did. I hope you can bring him along.
