Winter Pine Barrens
[This is a drain between cranberry bogs - a pretty wild sight! The whole bog was frozen but this one spot, pouring into the drain.]

Audrey and I have a soft spot in our hearts for the Pine Barrens in New Jersey. It’s one of the most wild areas on the East Coast, and lord knows we love wilderness. As it happens, our friend Allan (aka Lord Whimsy) knows a heck of a lot about the nature and history of the area and loves trecking out to the cranberry bogs in search of interesting stuff. In case you missed it, I took some of my favorite photos of the year on our orchid hunting adventure last spring. It was bitterly cold out – only 5′F and windy – today, but we had a great time exploring.

I can't wait for our next Pine Barrens adventure. The frozen cedar bogs at the end of the day really blew me away. Thanks for taking us out Whimsy...

Note to Audrey: If you'd like to see what a lot of those dried old weeds I pointed out yesterday look like in full bloom, scroll back through my Pine Barrens shots from last summer:

Good to have you babies out, as always.

PS to Josh: Bogs actually smell very nice in summer because of the cedars and the flowering plants like sweet pepperbush. Marshes are another story, especially at low tide.
  • Thanks again for taking us out, buddy. It's always a good time tramping around the pines with you.

  • Thanks!

No - doesn't smell much. But read Whimsy's comment to you below...
