Now that it’s getting nice (relatively) out again, almost spring, we’ve been stepping it up a bit on the running regimen. Today was a gorgeous sunny winter day, so we decided to head down to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge for a jog around the water. Turns out, this is a spectacular spot to go running.

The small loop trail is very well maintained, there is hardly anyone there, the visitor center is a great warming hut for cooling down and getting a drink of water, and the one loop is 3.3 miles around which is just about 5k. Perfect!

On top of that, it’s only about a 10 minutes drive down just past the PHL airport. And it’s terrific to be in a quiet nature preserve with lots of wild birds and information signs and bird lookouts like this:

  • Thank you for posting this map! We visited it this weekend, and I was writing up my blog entry and wanted to include a map. Sadly, we weren't able to pick one up at the center, and yours was the only version I found online.
  • No problem, Alyce! Thanks for stopping by. :)
  • I drive by this area all the time enroute to my boat in Maryland. I'll have to allow some time to pull over and enjoy this treasure.
  • joshuagrace
    looks like an awesome spot.
  • Awesome. I didn't even know they had trails in there! Do you know if you can bring dogs in?
  • Yup! Dogs are allowed - they do have a leash rule there, but I saw lots of folks walked them without - tho of course as a runner that freaks me out a little as you 'sneak up' behind an unleashed dog.
  • I want everyone commenting here to run the 2009 Philly Marathon with me!
  • I'll be at the Hash Beer stop next year at Philly Marathon for sure.
  • Define 'with'... 'cuz I might run it, but I'm certainly not going to be pacing at 6:30 minute miles like you did!
  • Well, I ran 7:19 splits, but I think you can do it! Just running it is so amazing.
  • roz
  • Signing up!
  • Love it! Sounds much more pleasant than the treadmill or city streets.
  • Much, much, much nicer.
