Hunter Gatherer’s Amazing New Song

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Audrey Dancing

Hunter Gatherer has an amazing new song! Audrey just wrote and recorded a demo she’s calling “Sirens“. After listening to it only once, I have fallen in love with it, and am compelled to share it with you. I’m not just saying ‘cuz she’s my wife and I’m biased, either! Not that I have to reiterate, but damn, this girl has crazy talent.

Please listen to more Hunter Gatherer songs, see some live performance vids and friend her up on her ye olde myspace profile. And stay tuned, because there will be more! buy mp3|download Eros Ramazzotti mp3|buy stereophonics mp3

I Love Tumblr

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I’ve been playing around with Tumblr lately, and have been totally diggin’ it. Check out my tumblog called Meem. Tumblogging (what a word!) is quick and painless posting, a little like Twitter, but more. A little like blogging, but less. Me likey.

I’ve been posting all sorts of ephemera from my journeys around the web. And posting photos from my cell phone from my journeys around my day (like the one above, taken under I-676 on 3rd Street). Fun!

Win a Date on The Illadates Show!

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Instead of having a party to celebrate the end of our second season of the Illadates show, we thought it might be fun to have a contest for our season finale show happening in a couple weeks. Isn’t that exciting!? Here’s the announcement we made yesterday:

Head over to uwishunu for details. You can email your date idea to iknow [at] uwishunu.com or leave a comment to enter the contest! We’ll be keeping track of the best pitches, and probably posting them in a blog post. You can vote for your faves, soon, too!

We can’t wait to hear what your favorite date in Philly is. Make ‘em good, people. We want to have some fun with you! Even if you don’t live in Philly, wouldn’t this be a great excuse for a visit?

And do us a favor… spread the word for us! Kthxbai.

Tempting Reasons to Move to Portland

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Not that Audrey and I want to leave Philly any day soon (we love it here!), but this article in the New York Times (with accompanying video) makes me salivate.

portland biking video on the New York Times

Portland and I have a long, mythological relationship. I’ve only spent a grand total of sixteen or seventeen days there spread over four or five visits and passing-throughs. But it’s always lurked around my mind as one of the greatest cities in America, embodying so many ideals I want in a lifestyle. Biking, sustainability, art, music, proximity to wilderness. Oddly, even though I’ve gone on and on about “someday soon I’ll be moving to Portland” during the travel years of my twenties, I never have. And I wonder if I ever will. Once, in the fall of 2002, I even packed my car, ready to move, but somehow through a strange twist of fate, ended up in Philly for a year before moving back to Colorado.

Who knows. Maybe I’ll get my stint in Portland yet.

My Brother Loves Pumpkin Carving

Monday, November 5th, 2007

This is a little late post-Halloween, but I just got these pics from my sister-in-law Molly. My brother Dave works at Dreamworks as a digital animator. This is the kind of pumpkins he carves:

A Lovely Evening of Music

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Last night’s show at Johnny Brenda’s was breath taking! Though I was full of nerves before they went on, Audrey and Gretchen played wonderfully. The other bands, Picastro and Scout Niblett blew me away. Watch some vids on my Live Music Journal. (UPDATE: just added another vid, the top one!)

Hunter Gatherer at Johnny Brenda’s

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Okay folks, this is a must-see! My wife’s band, Hunter Gatherer, previously a solo project, now a duo, is performing at Johnny Brenda’s on Sunday evening (October 28th at 9pm). Should be a lovely show as she’s opening for the excellent Scout Niblett. Come out and support her, hear her amazing songs! Of course, I’ll be video taping the performance and will be blogging it regardless, so if you’re far away or have a good excuse to miss it, just check back here in a couple days. Thx! See you Sunday!

Spend Less on Gas! Zero Per Gallon

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Really, a bicycle is the vehicle of the gods, in my opinion. The most sustainable, healthy, and fun way to get around. In an age of Peak Oil, this is an awesome little way to show why biking rules. I just read about this great meme on the Nau blog: stickers, t-shirts and patches to show your love for your non-fuel consuming, human-powered vehicles. I had the idea for a sticker for the downtube of my bike: “Zero Emission Vehicle“, but I might just get one of these. Dig it. Go get yours and support the cause Zero Per Gallon website here.

And let me leave you with this lil’ poem from Jonny5, the purveyor of the project:

    BIKING KICKS ASS

  • Biking is fun. Biking is fast.
  • Biking is quiet. Biking is cool.
  • Biking is healthy. Biking is simple.
  • Biking costs less for us.
  • Biking costs less for our cities.
  • Biking costs less for the planet.
  • Go ride a bike. And spread the word.

Wedding Photos!

Mark and Audrey's Wedding

My good friend Jeff Carpineta brought his super great vintage polaroid camera (don’t know the exact model UPDATE: it was a Polaroid Land Camera circa 1970). Want to see more photos? Check out my Flickr set or our wedding photo group on Flickr. If you were there, make sure to add you photos to the group pool! Thx!

In Rainbows from the Sky

In Rainbows Album Art
(not the real album art, it ain’t out yet, but a lovely conceptualization by hicksdesign. check the other designs people are leaving in the comments!)

Just downloaded and listened to the new Radiohead album. Oh my! The boys have out-done themselves again. So lovely. An instant classic. Track 8 “House of Cards” - OMFG.

Okay, enough cliched gushing. What I really want to talk about is how I’m totally in love with the new way Radiohead is distributing “In Rainbows“. For donation. DRM-Free! Downloaded direct. Or bought on heavy vinyl through the snail mail. This is, in my humble opinion, the future of the music business. And I’m happy to report, it has NOTHING to do with big, stupid industry record companies. This is why the Internet is so amazing! Self-publishing! Let’s all say it together, friends: Gutenberg had nothing on us! What times we live in!

The Arcade Fire’s Interactive Music Video

Monday, October 8th, 2007

I’m a huge fan of The Arcade Fire. And while they do have some awesomely creative videos out there in the Interwebs, this has to be one of the coolest music videos I have ever seen. It’s interactive! Click the image to watch (and play!).

Have Good Dates

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Behold, Illadates: Queen Village! Enjoy!

BTW, we’re showing you the version we uploaded to Viddler. I just wanted to give those nice fellas a quick shout out ‘cuz their player is dope (how cool is it that you can comment within the videos!) and they’re doing good work up in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, my old high school stomping grounds. Oh yeah, plus, they did us a sweet favor and featured us on their blog! Do yourself a favor and go upload some vids there!

An Homage to Ron Burgundy (the car)

Monday, October 1st, 2007

[Note: Audrey's gonna write her own posts on The Poverty Jet Set now, too! Hurray!]

Today my trusty steed, Ron Burgundy, was towed away to rest his rusty bones in some kind of junkyard. Yes, my burgundy 1994, four-door Oldsmobile had a name, and he served me well. We shared many moments together. Mark and I were with Ron when he hit 100,000 on the odometer back on our road trip last winter. Here, you can watch for yourself…

All I have left to remember him by are these videos and this I BRAKE FOR GOLF COURSES plate cover. Heh. Adios, Ron.

In Honor of the Fightin’ Phillies!

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Oh baby! Can you believe it? History, folks. That’s history. And now, I give you this… a video my friends and I made on opening day back in April… when everyone knew this was possible. When everyone thought it could happen. The vibe was right. It was in the air.

Congrats, Phils! You rule! Onward!

Illadates: Feel the Love

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

We’ve made our re-debut on uwishunu.com just now, and just got interviewed by Joey at Philebrity.com for the relaunch of the video blog!

You know, there’s only ever a few good ideas in the universe at any given time. Did you guys use the existential crisis presented by this to alter the show?
LOL, nah. We’re still Cheap Dates at heart. But we did take a few liberties in how we’re approaching it. We’re classy geeks, so we figured losing the ‘cheap’ was okay. Plus, our dates weren’t bottom-basement cheap (like drinkin’ Pabst in paper bags in the park).

Be Brave, Burma!

Monks Protesting in Burma

Here’s to hoping that the oppressed people can stand strong together and shake off their ugly military dictatorship! I’ve spent a good deal of time in South East Asia, but only got a mile from the border of Burma/Myanmar because of the terrible situation in that country and the border skirmishes with Thailand at the time.

Down with tyranny!

Our Dates Show is Back!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

We used to call ourselves Cheap Dates, but due to a lil’ trademark trouble, we’re now calling our show of dating awesomeness in Philly Illadates. Made with love, to you and yours.

In Episode 13 of Illadates, we decided to try something new. Let us know what you think! A double date with a couple of guest stars! Writer, blogger, dandy extraordinaire, soon-to-be-portrayed-by-Johnny-Depp-on-film (truth!) Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy and his lovely wife Lady Pinkwater brought us to some of their favorite spots in town.

We started by a fanciful walk through the lovely historical Bartram’s Garden, birthplace of American horticulture. Then, true to dandy form, we had a late afternoon aperitif at Caribou Cafe on 12 & Walnut. Beau Monde’s amazing crepes finished off our evening but not before we stopped into Anastacia’s Antiques, a curiosity shop on Bainbridge Street not to be missed!
