Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Viral Video

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

I just made this fun lil’ video at Dylan’s new compilation album promo site (via Adverblog). Yeah, I’m just shillin’ for the man, but it sure was fun and who doesn’t like ol’ Bobby D?

It must be noted that the original bit was part of a masterwork by one of my all-time heros, D.A. Pennebaker. The film, Don’t Look Back, recently got remastered for DVD, you might want to pick up a copy!

(They didn’t allow me to embed the flash video, so I captured it and uploaded it to YouTube. Their loss.)

Awesome Neu! Video

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Neu! is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their sound is so raw, so inventive. I have their albums 1 and 2 on constant rotation on my playlists. This new live video surfaced recently on YouTube, I caught it on the Arthur Magazine blog, Magpie. Thanks to those guys for pointing it out. It’s a bit short, but it does the trick. If I could go back in time with a video camera, these guys would definitely be on my Live Music Journal!

New Videos on Live Music Journal

Friday, August 31st, 2007

I haven’t been going out to many shows over the last month, but I’ve seen 10 bands this week! It’s good to be back in in the thick of the action! Come check out all the new vids I have up on Live Music Journal including this awesome rendition of George Harrison’s “Wah Wah” by my buddies The Capitol Years and a bunch of their friends playing at Johnny Brenda’s last night. Love those free-for-all-let’s-all-get-on-stage-together moments. So fun!

The Catalpa Music Festival Wrap Up

Monday, August 27th, 2007

This weekend, a bunch of my friends and I drove up to the mountains outside of State College, PA (home to my alma mater, Penn State) and had a music festival freak out hosted by dear folk Nathaniel, Catie and Kevin. Good times! I’m uploading some video to my Live Music Journal as I get time to do so, but do watch these to get the summation.

One of my favorite performances (see video above) of the day was Enumclaw who played as the hot summer sun started dipping down onto the horizon. It was truly magical. Also, the projector art (see video below) these fellas were throwing was inspired. This clip during the Evening Fires set. Also, one might say, magical.

Man Man is Blowing Up!

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

32235.Manman7

While driving leisurely down Spring Garden Street the other day, we spotted our friend Ryan, lead singer of the band Man Man riding his bike. He came over and said hi while we were stopped at the light when we noticed there was a shady car following him around pointing large cameras in his directions.

He didn’t mention them to us, but it turns out it was a Pitchfork video crew dialing in a new show about the good fellas. Sweet! Can’t wait to see it!

Man Man is recording their third, as-of-yet-untitled album. Stay tuned for that.

And don’t forget, if you’re itchin’ for some good music, head over to my new video blog Live Music Journal to catch some vids of some great bands performing in Philly. I got some amazing Pissed Jeans vids. Those dOOdz kill it.

Hunter Gatherer’s First Live Performance!

Monday, June 11th, 2007

My fiance Audrey has been working so hard, practicing her songs and finally… it’s time! Time to play in front of a group of real, live people!

Behold: Hunter Gatherer!

I’m so proud of her! I can’t wait. Be sure to check back here or here for videos of the performance (of course!). And if you’re interested, you should listen to her songs on MySpace and friend her up. She needs those “early adopter” fans before she hits the big time. That could be you!

Also, and not insignificantly, it’s my dear, dear friends David and Gillian’s 7th wedding anniversary. What a celebration! Come if you can!

UPDATE: Okay, so this party is apparently an invite-only affair… to keep it family-style. But hey, if you’re family, hit me up, we’ll get ya there.

The Valerie Project Takes Off

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Here’s another plug for an amazing project that good friends of mine here in Philly are doing. Faithful readers of my blog will know I’ve written about them before. But they are truly doing such great work, the project has come so far, and I’m so proud of them. Really. They wrote and perform live a new original score to the 1970 Czech New Wave film, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. But honestly, they don’t even need a plug from me as they were recently invited to show at Jarvis Cocker’s Meltdown in London this summer and at MOMA in the fall! Amazing.

If you are in Philly, make sure to check out this screening!

Because I’m Completely Crazy, and I Really Love Making Video

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

[Noah and Sammy bustin' moves]

I go to see a lot of live music. A ton of live music. I usually take my video camera with me. So of course, I have tons of footage from live shows, and will likely shoot a crapload more. So, on a whim, I decided to start a whole new project: a Live Music Journal

I just went and saw Tussle, Professor Murder and Golden Ball at a great warehouse show here in Philly (the fantastically-named ‘Avant Gentlemen’s Lodge’). Everyone put on a seriously good show! And my, what projections! Awesome. I shot a little of each band’s set on my new, albeit slightly annoying and way over-hyped hybrid camcorder Sanyo Xacti HD2. *instert snarky British accent here* “the World’s Smallest High Definition Camera”

Here’s a taste of Tussle:

Honeymoon Music is Blogging!

Monday, March 26th, 2007

My dear friend Norm runs a great record label out of his house in Fishtown called Honeymoon Music that puts out all sorts of awesomeness. They just did a site redesign and now would be a great time to go check them out!

The painting is in their gallery of fine works by friends. That piece was done by our compatriot, Ryan Deemer.

Arthur Magazine, R.I.P. 2002 - 2007

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

It’s a sad day in the world of underground media and music. The venerable, excellent and unique magazine offering, Arthur shut it’s doors today. They covered all sorts of great bands from the cover story on Sunn O))))) to introducing me to Growing.

I knew that things weren’t all well because my pal Laris Kreslins had been the mag’s publisher until last month when he announced to us all that he was stepping down. I didn’t hear why, exactly, but I guess things weren’t right.

I’m sad to see it go. It was a great find, imported from the freaky SoCal scene by Laris himself, when he moved to Philly.

I hope something as good can spring from its ashes.

Update: Maybe it’s not dead after all! More after the jump…

Pakistani Music Revue

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

I share with you this guy Joe Taheny’s blog post about the music of Pakistan. He’s a traveler who’s just interested in this stuff and does a pretty cool job of documenting it. Pretty awesome stuff, with great videos to boot.

I love folk music, man! Especially the classical and folk music from Asia. It’s amazing. Have a look.

A Day with Whimsy

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

The Golden Ball crew and I went out to the deep wilds of the Jersey Pine Barrens yesterday to shoot a video for their new single. Lucky for us, we had a Whimsy for a guide. (Click this link for more photos)
