Farewell, Syd.

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

A sad day for music. The reclusive artist, Syd Barrett died today. He was 60 years old. He was a genius, an innovator and a beautiful soul. I hope he’s found his peace.

Growing, Growing, Growing!

Monday, July 10th, 2006

Summer is in full swing up in the North East. We’re sweating it out in the heavy air that filling every pore of our existence. So we’ve opened all the windows and prayed for even the slightest breeze to shuffling things up a bit. It’s too hot to think.

So while sitting in my little urban backyard, sipping cold beer on a Sunday, staring at the sky, I’ve found the perfect soundtrack: the amazing new album by Growing, “Color Wheel”;. I just can’t get enough of it - I keep repeating it again and again. It’s one of those albums that gets under you skin. When it ends, I get this empty feeling, like the heat and humidity are winning the battle all of a sudden, like without the soundtrack, the film stops…

The end of the album in itself is amazing: something like fog horn blasts (probably some MOOG excellence) that pulses with it’s low drone, punctuating the clouds, piercing the sky and magically sending rain.

Make sure to check out the cover story on Growing in this month’s Arthur Magazine.

The Brightblack Light of Morning…

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Just saw one of the best shows of the year at the First Unitarian Church in Philly this past Sunday (June 25th, ‘06)… Brightblack Morning Light played with my good friends, Espers (and Mairee Sioux opening). Those guys were tapping into some powerful vibes. Two drum kits, guitar, Fender Rhodes and super processed vocals… They got into a heavy groove for the packed, sweaty house. Super mellow, with very simple progressions but way into subtlety. Gorgeous riffs explored in depth.

Espers started off with super intense renditions of the first half of their set, but encountered some bad static feedback from their monitors which sort of took the wind out of their sails, unfortunately. Great show, though. If you haven’t heard their new album “Espers II”, you should.

After the show the bands all came back to our house and chilled out… merry times had by all… those kids definitely embody the Poverty Jet Set Ethic!!

Make sure to catch Brightblack when they come to your town!
