I spent a good portion of the weekend watching the action at the Hardcourt Bicycle Polo World Championships (won by Team Smile from Seattle). The action was intense and the crowd was way into it. Here are some of my photos, including my favorite:

It’s Cold Near Lake Huron, But Not This Cold

Michigan has had the coldest winter in decades. Water expands to freeze, and at Macinaw City the water in Lake Huron below the surface ice was supercooled. It expanded to break through the surface ice and froze into this incredible wave.

Spend Some Time with Library of Congress Images

Being the history buff that I am, I was excited to learn about Flickr’s partnership with huge archives of public domain images like the Library of Congress. There are thousands of images there now, ranging from black and white baseball photos to rich colorful images of sharecroppers. The photo above, “Faro and Doris Caudill, homesteaders, Pie Town, New Mexico“, makes me think of my day dream of Audrey and my future life. Like some kind of nostalgia for the future.

One of the great things about the Flickr Commons images is that most of them are copyright-free. I’ve been looking for images for posters and other artwork, and it feels great that I could literally take my pick.

On a side note, I think I might want to emulate the guy’s style this year. So cool!

Winter in the Pine Barrens

[This is a drain between cranberry bogs - a pretty wild sight! The whole bog was frozen but this one spot, pouring into the drain.]

Audrey and I have a soft spot in our hearts for the Pine Barrens in New Jersey. It’s one of the most wild areas on the East Coast, and lord knows we love wilderness. As it happens, our friend Allan (aka Lord Whimsy) knows a heck of a lot about the nature and history of the area and loves trecking out to the cranberry bogs in search of interesting stuff. In case you missed it, I took some of my favorite photos of the year on our orchid hunting adventure last spring. It was bitterly cold out – only 5′F and windy – today, but we had a great time exploring.

Location Scouting on the Delaware

Audrey and her classmate Jesse are shooting a short film on 16mm this month and we all went out location scouting on the banks of the Delaware River just north of Port Richmond in Philly, nearly under the Betsy Ross Bridge. We just happened to stumble upon this fabulous little old overgrown jetty that was simply magical.

Death to Polaroid, Long Live Polaroid!

Polaroid is no longer making film stock for their instant cameras. This is sad. However, I just discovered a fun lil’ free app they put up for download from their UK page. Converts any .jpg into a pretty awesome simulation of the real thing, scanned in. It makes the cool sound of the camera, and even makes you wait for the photo to ‘develop’. Get it now.

Vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine

Audrey and I drove all the way up to Bar Harbor (a 12-hour drive) with our friends Nancy, Will and Adam for a long weekend of BBQing, sailing, hiking and general funtimes with our buddy Julian who is living up there. It was the absolutely quintessential American 4th of July. And we had picture perfect weather to boot. Here’s the whole set of photos of the trip, and a couple choice shots:

Man, we have been so crazy busy of late, it feels like time has flown by. This weekend, Audrey and I finally got a chance to mellow out, plant some tomato plants and herbs and relax in our new backyard. Yes, we have a hammock in our yard. And yes, it’s fabulous.
