Drunken Fly Fishing Master

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

So I’m hanging out in Telluride, Colorado this past weekend at MountainFilm Festival. It’s the last day of my time there, and my buddy Luigi and I are just minding our own business, hanging out enjoying a little mountain sunshine and springtime creek sounds when this fella comes up to us and says,

“Hey brothers, I hate to ask, but could you perhaps, if the Gods divine it, spare a small nugget for a travelin’ man?” We don’t have any, but he continues to entertain us with his interesting pressense. Apparently, he’s just in town doin’ a little fly fishing.

Oh, and speaking of fly fishing, if you’re a fan or even vaguely curious about the sport, you should really have a look at the trailer of my friend Ben Knight’s film “Running Down the Man” that debuted this year at MountainFilm. He and his buddies head down to Baja California to fish for the “uncatchable” roosterfish and tool around on a pretty wicked dune buggy. You can pick up a copy of his film on DVD from his website. You won’t regret it.

Cheap Dates :: Frankford Ave Arts

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Audrey and I have been out of town for a week, and amazingly, I didn’t check my email or blog once! Whoa. But I did want you all to have a quick look at our video podcast that is alive and well, with two new episodes we made before we left.

The first is Episode 3 where we go check out the “Frankford Avenue Arts Corridor” on the border of Fishtown and Kensington. They were having a big arts festival to kick off the summer up there, including an awesome kinetic sculpture derby where people built crazy-ass bikes and rode them on a challenge course around the neighborhood. Check it out!

The NYTimes’ Frugal Traveler is at it Again

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Picture 1-3

A kindred heart, to be sure, but with a much more enviable job title than mine, the New York Times’ Frugal Traveler is on the road again, this time making his way zig-zag style around the lower 48 United States.

I like this series because, well, that’s what I do! And now the fella is uploading short video podcasts each Wednesday so you can follow along on his journey. Crazy how similar his videos are to Audrey and my ‘Cheap Dates‘! Maybe she and I will be working for the NYTimes one day, bringing you hot video action from all over the globe! Stay tuned.

The two bad things about the NYTime’s videos: 1.) pre-roll advertisments (boring!) and 2.) no embedding! (you’ll have to click through to watch them).

Cheap Dates: Bella Vista (Episode 2)

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

We’re already on to Episode 2 of the Cheap Dates Video Podcast.

Funny story: Episode 1 got screened in front of 400+ guests (whoa) at the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation’s annual gala the other night. Audrey and I show up fashionably late, totally clueless. We didn’t know anything about them showing it. So we’re all browsing the food and drink when we realize everyone is staring at us. Uh. Weird. Then sure enough, people start coming up to us and introducing themselves. “Hey! Love the video! Can’t wait to see more” etc, etc, etc. Very surreal. And of course awkward. Not to mention that true-to-form, we were way under-dressed.

But that’s what you can do when you’re the “arteests.”

Because I’m Completely Crazy, and I Really Love Making Video

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

[Noah and Sammy bustin' moves]

I go to see a lot of live music. A ton of live music. I usually take my video camera with me. So of course, I have tons of footage from live shows, and will likely shoot a crapload more. So, on a whim, I decided to start a whole new project: a Live Music Journal

I just went and saw Tussle, Professor Murder and Golden Ball at a great warehouse show here in Philly (the fantastically-named ‘Avant Gentlemen’s Lodge’). Everyone put on a seriously good show! And my, what projections! Awesome. I shot a little of each band’s set on my new, albeit slightly annoying and way over-hyped hybrid camcorder Sanyo Xacti HD2. *instert snarky British accent here* “the World’s Smallest High Definition Camera”

Here’s a taste of Tussle:

I [heart] Adventure Travel and New Media

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Man, I’m picking my jaw up off the floor. Just when I thought I knew a lil’ something something about video blogging, about documentaries, all of a sudden, by some crazy weird stroke of luck, this guy named Mike1630 favorites The Poverty Jet Set on Technorati. I don’t even check in on my Technorati profile save for every couple months (it’s painful to see how low my ‘blog ranking’ is… blah!).

Okay, so this Mike fella. He’s working on a documentary film about… you might have guessed it… long distance biking. Namely biking across America. It’s called Project Pedal. But you know, the thing is, this project has more class, more energy, more artistry than any vlog or indie documentary about adventure I’ve seen in a long time. I’m in awe. Literally. Wow. And of course, Mike’s got one of the prettiest, coolest websites I’ve ever seen, and he’s making some of the coolest, prettiest video podcasts that I have ever seen.

Enough praise, already. Just watch the freaking first episode of the podcast, people! If you’re not hooked into watching the next three (so far) immediately like I was… well, I don’t know what. But you’re silly. Or boring. Okay, okay, that might be going a little far… (too much coffee today).

Now about that title to this post. See, thing is, I’ve been writing a lot lately about long-distance biking. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been talking about doing a bike trip across county for a long, long time. I’ve met so many long distance bikers in my travels both here and abroad and I’ve always been inspired by them. I WILL do it myself one day. And hopefully before too long.

In the meantime, I’m learning more and more about online video (being a vlogger and filmmaker and all), and I’m excited to see all the ways people are implementing this kind of documentation into adventure. In a couple weeks, I’m going to be working at the Mountain Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado. I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot of films on the subject of adventure, but how cool is it to watch adventures as they happen? I dig it. Let’s make it happen.

Cheap Dates: Audrey and My New Video Podcast Series

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Just launched (after much blood, sweat and tears) the first episode of our new video podcast series about going on fun dates in Philly. What started as a lil’ nugget of an idea blossomed into this much larger project. We’re having a ton of fun making them and… what the hell? Right? We’re getting to explore every corner of the city! Sweet. They’ll be getting better, too, so stay tuned! Behold: Cheap Dates!

Play Me.

We’re sponsored by uwishunu and Philebrity TV! Thanks, guys. And just an extra shout-out to our good friend Adam from The War on Drugs who supplied the soundtrack!

A Track Bike is a Thing of Beauty

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Picture 11

Just had the pleasure of redeeming the NYTimes in my own mind after ranting about them the other day. They did it with a great piece about fixie bikes and urban bike culture. I can tell you this, riding a track bike is really one of the most beautiful things. The machine is so elegant, so simple. It’s almost an art. And the great thing is that fixies were around a lot longer than modern geared bikes.

Truth be told, I no longer ride a fixed-gear bike. I got my front wheel caught in a trolley track and did a front header into traffic a couple years ago. Scared the bejesus outa me. I ain’t got health insurance, after all. Luckily I wasn’t hurt, but I really like the idea of brakes (so does my mama). I sold that bike to my buddy Jay who promptly got plowed by a car and smashed up his face. He still rides it, though. For better or worse!

Now, my bike is only one step removed from fixie. Brakes and a freewheel hub. I might go back, though. It’s so tempting after watching an amazing video - truly sublime - about fixie riding in San Francisco like this [via BoingBoing]:

The Tuxedo Travelers

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Admit it, there’s something goofy about a coupl’a blokes wearing tuxedos when they ain’t at a wedding. You know, like Charlie Chaplain funny. All goofy and fumbling and why-the-hell-are-they-wearing-those-outfits. Enter Tuxedo Travels. Two dudes on a mission. To wear a tuxedo all the way around the world. Something Lord Whimsy might get into, though I think he’d do it in a much classier suit. At any rate, these guys, the ‘delegates‘ Heath and Douglas, are blogging and vlogging and obviously having a really fun time. And you know, I wouldn’t post about something like this unless they really made me laugh. And laugh out loud I did. Watching this:

True/False Film Festival (Part 2)

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

During the festival, we saw a bunch of great films, but also a lot of great music. The good people at True/False are big fans of busking hoboes (as are we, of course!). Well, maybe they’re not quite hoboes, but they sure love hobo music. In this part, we show a few clips of some of our new friends having sing alongs, review a couple films, and introduce you to the great people behind the film “Camp Katrina” and “Mardi Gras: Made in China”.

True/False Film Festival (Part 1)

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Audrey and I went to Columbia, Missouri this past weekend to participate in the wonderful film festival, True/False. We were thinking about getting a video up each day while there, but it turned out we just got too busy. I compiled some of the clips into two entertaining parts… Behold, the first… (ps - sorry about the weird clicking sound in the beginning… technical issues had, but later solved)

Golden Ball Live @ PiLam

It was a lovely evening of butt shakin’ and whatnot at PiLam on Penn’s campus the other night. Here’s a quick lil’ piece of action from Golden Ball’s set.

Never a Dull Moment in the City

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Today, as I’m sitting at my desk as home working away, I hear all these sirens go off, and then shortly thereafter a bunch of helicopters just hovering around overhead. I think, I’ve got to go check this out… the helicopter noise is driving me nuts! Here’s my report.

Best Buy Dancing Guy!

Monday, February 12th, 2007

The other night, Audrey and I stroll casually into the Philly Best Buy on Columbus Blvd. and stumble onto this scene:

The guy is shameless, I love it! Dancing his heart out to Michael Jackson videos streaming through YouTube with half the store’s employees gathered around rooting him on. Apparently, he does it every night.
