I love visualizing data and other neat stuff (yes, I’m a nerd). Here are two cool things I’ve come across recently. Click on the images to see them full sized.

Boulder, CO artist Chris Yates created an abstract, London Tube-style map of Dwight Eisenhower’s Interstate highway system which you can buy as a print for $12 plus shipping.

Nazareth Polar Bear Swim

I have never done the swim yet, but I have heard about it’s legend for years. My brother Paul, his best friend Chris, Chris’s siblings and several other nutty kids love to jump into the Bushkill Creek at Jacobsburg State Park in my high school hometown every Christmas. This is the ~~8th~~ 9th year they’ve done it! I love this kind of good old fashioned funtimes. I’m going to try my best to be there for the 10-year anniversary. Down on one of the backstreets among the broken down factories near the waterfront behind our house, hundreds of people gather on a nice day to race their tricked out four-wheelers. It is a crazy sight, to be sure. Nary a helmet in sight and outa control bravado, it’s really like the old wild west. Racing for money and honor.

After hanging out for a while this afternoon and chattin’ up a few of the racers, we’re convinced we must make a documentary about this amazing subculture. Stay tuned for that.

Dig a hole to China

I was pretty young when I realized that ‘digging a hole to China’ wasn’t really possible. My brother and I used to sit looking at my dad’s globe and figure out where we’d end up if we went straight down. Now, my buddies at Geekadelphia pointed me out to a super simple tool to do the globe thing digitally.

Turns out we here in Philly would end up somewhere under the Indian Ocean off the coast of Perth, Australia:

Vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine

Audrey and I drove all the way up to Bar Harbor (a 12-hour drive) with our friends Nancy, Will and Adam for a long weekend of BBQing, sailing, hiking and general funtimes with our buddy Julian who is living up there. It was the absolutely quintessential American 4th of July. And we had picture perfect weather to boot. Here’s the whole set of photos of the trip, and a couple choice shots:

Big Buck Hunter Rulez

Norm and I spent two hours and probably close to twenty bucks playing Big Buck Hunter on Saturday night at Paddy’s Well in Fishtown. I’m telling you, this is the best arcade game in the world. Anyone who wants to play soon, you’re on! Cheap drinks, good buddies at a dive bar with fun arcade games. You really can’t beat that for a late night weekend.
